In August of 2014 I reached out to Hannah and Kelty (otherwise know as the forces behind The Weaver House) because I knew I wanted to photograph them. We had some mutual friends, I had followed their work, and their Instagram feed, and I couldn't sit by imagining anymore, I needed to make something happen with these ladies. And because sometimes the universe winks a magical nod in my favor, they responded by telling me they'd just been talking about hiring me. They might have even used the term "kindred spirits" in their initial reply. So we scheduled a family session, and then we rescheduled approximately 100 times, because LIFE got in the way it likes to. But in yet another instance of magical timing, when I did finally get my camera on them (and their girls, and their menfolk), it was on what ended up being our last warm and gorgeous October evening, one that would have made Anne Shirley swoon. I drove home from that session thinking that if I hadn't just created some of my best work, I was going to have to question my future as a family photographer.

You can decide for yourself what you think, but I'm pretty damn pleased with these results.

      raising up nine

Sometimes the hardest posts to write are the sessions I loved the most; This is definitely one of those cases. Bee contacted me through Instagram about booking a session when we were on our California road trip in June. She told me she had 9 babies (NIIIIIINE) and wondered if that would be too much for me. She said all kinds of wonderful things about my work, and then she said the magic words: "I kinda love the crazy and different so even dressed in what they choose and not even looking but just being in the frame doing whatever kinda speaks to my heart..." (she also told me she had a daughter named Posie, so yeah: sold, sold and SOLD).

We met at their home in Los Gatos, California on a hot-as-blazes kind of afternoon. Baby Otis napped, while sweet Meme gave me a tour of the house, and Posie flipped me all kinds of sass, that made me grin from ear-to-ear. I have never in my life interacted with someone with the same name as mine and it was an interesting experience indeed, but she absolutely owns the name and has the perfect personality to accompany it. She made me proud in the two hours I was with her, and she isn't even my kid. Ha!

I could draft paragraphs about each of the nine children. Truly, the thing that I took away from this session more than anything is that raising nine incredibly kind, respectful, funny, and unique people is entirely possible. I'll be honest, I expected this session to be chaos and hard work, and while it's true we may have temporarily "lost" one of the children (side eyes to you, Amos), overall the afternoon we spent together was completely enjoyable. I am in awe of this family and their seemingly effortless bond. I was honored to be invited into their world and asked to capture it. I sure hope I did them justice.

      sweet lottie

Poor sweet Lottie was quite a "grumpy knickers" when I arrived, which I'm pretty sure is British for teething. But it was nothing a little nip, some snuggles, and a chance to play with her mum's makeup bag, couldn't fix (also, a dose of paracetamol helped, which is British for Tylenol, btw). Documenting your life sometimes means capturing the less-than-ideal moments, but in the end, I believe they are just as beautiful and worthy of remembering. I'm so pleased I was able to capture Lottie's range of emotions at this sweet age.

      everything here is wonderful

This is what your childhood looks like when your funny, gorgeous, hip-to-the-core, and extremely loving parents, run a bustling popular restaurant in N.W. Portland; Your downtime at home will undoubtably include pillow fights, tickles, ukulele strumming, ivory tinkling, block tower building while listening to T-Rex, and tormenting, ahem I mean loving-on, your two little pooches, Bradley and June. And the times you're not at home? Well when your book-loving mama isn't taking you to the library, or your mellow little playgroup, she'll often bring you in to your family restaurant to hang out behind the scenes with your pop, while she enjoys a burger and cocktail in peace. You've got it pretty good kid, and your parents, well they're working damn hard to make sure you don't feel the pressure of restaurant life, and as far as I can tell, they're doing a damn fine job. We spent a "typical Sunday" together, reading stories and wrestling around in their apartment, a walk to their favorite neighborhood  park (and happened upon a block party which meant the street was closed which meant we got to take photos in the middle of an otherwise busy neighborhood street - whoop whoop!), and finished off our day with ice cream. It doesn't really get any better than that. I love you, Barkers! Maybe someday I'll get to see your the West Coast version of your perfect Sunday...

      our thirteen together

If you've read this blog for more than five minutes you know I am plentiful in favorites; I used to think it was impossible to pick a favorite, until I realized that favorites aren't exclusive. I don't have a favorite food, song, movie, pair of boots... you get the idea. So when I sit down to write a blog post I start nearly every one calling the family in the photos "my favorite" and then scratching it because YOU ARE ALL MY FAVORITE. And trying to narrow down a  year that was cram-packed with awesomeness, into a select handful of favorite images, well as far as I'm concerned, it just can't be done; keeping this one under 200 was almost more than I could handle. In the end, I'm sharing one hundred and seventy-something favorite images from 2013, yours and mine, ours together.

I love photographing people in the comfort of their own homes, but I'm always down for a adventure that has me shooting in a less traditional setting. This being the session of the family behind the force that is Supportland (Katrina, Michael, Daphne and Zucca) it seemed only appropriate the we do something totally Portland (hello Portland Flea I'm talking to you). And after pining over the School House Electric catalog it occurred to me that the place has gorgeous light, every inch of it is photo-worthy, and they're on the Supportland network, so it just seemed like the perfect home-away-from-home for these folks. We had a stupid amount of fun on this day and I am beyond thrilled with the results.

In other news, you guys, it's November. We have officially arrived at the season of needing an indoor location for photos. When home isn't an option I am always willing to think outside the box with you; I love the creative challenge of coming up with a location that suits your family and works for photos. And even though we are nearing the end of Christmas Card Crazytown scheduling, I have had a handful of people need to reschedule their sessions this month to later in the year and have a couple spots left that will guarantee a mid-December turnaround. So if you thought you were too late for fall family photos, or maybe you were just waiting for the rain to set in for a very Northwesty photo session (ha!), we are officially here. Oh and while we're talking scheduling, I only have a couple December sessions available but would love love love to do a tree cutting/decorating/celebrating-winter session with a few of you.

Oh hey I just looked out the window and I see blue sky, fluffy clouds, and the sun, on November 2nd, what the whaaaat?!

I could write many paragraphs about how much I adore this family. Jacob and Franny went to preschool together last year, and are thick as thieves; sometimes they're going to get married, sometimes they're brother and sister, always their love for each other is fierce.

This wasn't a Halloween-inspired photo session. Jacob isn't even dressing up as Spiderman for Halloween (he's a clown, as is his dad, Ruby is a lion, Susan is the ring master. Seriously, this family is rad.) Spiderman came to the photo session because Jake is almost always at work, and on this day, he was working as a super hero. The first time I picked him up from school for an after school play date, he told me in a completely matter-of-fact fashion that he was employed by the Coast Guard as a deep sea diver, it was hard work but he got to be in the water all day so it was alright; he used to be a fire fighter but he was fired after he was found eating mac-n-cheese when he was supposed to be suiting up for a fire. He had really let his coworkers down. Oh man, get this kid going on his coworkers and you'll be entertained for hours. When he's working as a super hero he has a coworker named Medical Pants. She wears no pants, but you can't tell when she's flying. Seriously, you can't make this stuff up. But Jacob can. And boy do we love him for it.

And Ruby. Oh Ruby. The first time I saw her face, and those eyes, I knew I was going to have to get her in front of my camera. She's as feisty as her brother is imaginative, with just the right amount sass to go along with that darling face. She's rarely seen without at least one baby in her arms ('not sure how we ended up without any at the photo session) and she doesn't tolerate any guff from the big kids. She's one of those kids you just want to scoop up eat when you see her, but you learn quickly that she's much tougher than those sweet curls imply. You've got to work a little to earn Ruby's trust, and that's just as it should be.

I'll spare you the additional paragraphs about the parents, because I think you can tell by these images, and just how incredible their kids are, that they're doing this parenting thing just right. I feel pretty dang lucky to have them not just as clients but as friends too.

Summer rituals: after-dinner strolls to the neighborhood park, splashing in the fountain, a backyard family jamboree, ICE CREAM, tree climbing, sun coming through the windows long after bedtime... these are the things that we hope are burned in our children's memories. They are what give summertime that extra spark of magic. And it is these beautiful bits of the everyday that I love to capture; they are the ordinary-yet-extraordinary moments that I strive to see, record, and savor. And this here evening in August, in the home/yard/park of Archer B. and his adoring fan club, was just the right mixture of familiar and exceptional. Summertime magic in every sense of the word folks.

      springtime in alameda

(psssst, do you see what happened right there? I got five pairs of human eyes and a cat looking at me at the same time, dudes!)

I love the way I was able to capture the beauty, love, and controlled chaos that is life with three kids under five. And that's all I'm gonna say because it's Friday and the sun is peaking through the clouds and I need to get myself outside to celebrate this first day of SUMMER!

      Happy weekend, ya'lls!

The amazingly beautiful crazy talented super stylish world travelling photographerextraordinaire Shelby Brakken and her equally rad family on a sunny-turned-rainy day in March; at home, on the street, sharing ice cream, and buying white gloves and LPs on the Lodekka dress bus. We didn't even have to travel to another continent to have an adventure.
