butterfly beach (and a little trespassing)

Seeing as how I just shot the newborn session of the little nugget who appears in utero in this session, I figured I ought to share some of these first. I felt pretty dang lucky when I found out that these fabulous clients of mine were going to be visiting family in Santa Barbara at the same time I was there in June. So excited I forgot to check tide schedules when selecting the time of our session; we just about ran out of beach space and had to seek refuge on the property of a pretty fancy hotel across the street. We pretended we belonged there and nobody was the wiser. I love where I live, and all the fabulous people here, but it sure was fun playing in California over the summer. I can't wait to see what 2016 brings me (hint hint: I'll be announcing travel sessions soon!)... two thousand fourteen, with you

77 sessions 10 cities 5 states 34,500 frames (approximately) 385 kisses (at least) 237 family members 12 new babies; 12 ice cream cones 10 tacos 9 donuts 2 lollypops 1 candy cane and >100 smarties consumed; 5 guitars strummed 3 tractor rides 2 ears pierced 1 father-son karaoke rendition of Ring of Fire, more noses picked than I'd like to remember, and an infinite amount of LOVE. 2014 made my head spin in the absolute best way, and it wouldn't have been what it was without all of these incredible people trusting me to capture their real beauty and true love. xo, PQ Posy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.com

miette inside

Tomorrow morning I get to meet and photograph the newest member of this family, Miette, who was born just a few weeks ago. I figured I ought to share her first photo session - the one in which she was still in her mama's belly - first. I cannot wait to see Julien and Annouk in big brother/sister mode, and, of course, to get some brand new baby snuggle time in. archer's farm

I've heard a thing or two about this Don Kruger fellow, but according to soon-to-be-big-brother Archer, this is his farmland out on Sauvie Island, and well, I'm inclined to believe the kid. Just look at the way he owns it! Seriously though, these folks... Just look at how Andy looks at Alexis, or how Alexis laughs at Andy, or Archer and Alexis's matching silly expressions. They. Just. Slay. Me.

I have no doubt the next little member of their family will have loads of personality, and I can hardly wait until early winter when I get to meet him and capture their family as four. Eep!

our thirteen together

If you've read this blog for more than five minutes you know I am plentiful in favorites; I used to think it was impossible to pick a favorite, until I realized that favorites aren't exclusive. I don't have a favorite food, song, movie, pair of boots... you get the idea. So when I sit down to write a blog post I start nearly every one calling the family in the photos "my favorite" and then scratching it because YOU ARE ALL MY FAVORITE. And trying to narrow down a  year that was cram-packed with awesomeness, into a select handful of favorite images, well as far as I'm concerned, it just can't be done; keeping this one under 200 was almost more than I could handle. In the end, I'm sharing one hundred and seventy-something favorite images from 2013, yours and mine, ours together.

lovebird maternity session

It's true I absolutely adore chasing kids around, and the victory of capturing their true spirit and relationships between each other, and their parents. But there is also something special about spending time focusing on the two people who created their family. I've known Tiffany and Shanon for over 5 years now, and I'm pretty sure if you've been following this blog for more than 5 minutes, you know them too, along with their brood. We decided this time around, for their fourth and final babe, but first-ever maternity session, that we would try something new: no kids (except, you know, the one still baking). So just before Valentine's day we met on a beautiful sunny morning in a gorgeous public garden and captured these sweeter-than-sugar belly love photos.

The icing on that extra sweet cake? This feature on Let the Kids today. Click on over there and show me (and them!) some love. And after you do that come back here, I've got more to say! (Please and thank you.)

I can't sign off on this post without sharing that after years of talking about it, my girl T finally launched a blog all about her adventures in parenting, and beyond. You can find her and her "hoodlums" here. I've gotta be honest, although I love the way she writes, my absolute favorite column over there is "sisterly small talk" in which she reports complete conversations between her two daughters. Those girls are too much; I laugh till I cry every time.

Alright that's about enough out of me today. But come back here tomorrow, okay? I've got something extra special to share with you, or rather, someONE (hint: 2+4=6!).

favorite moments captured in 2012

I could type out thank you in every language; I could thesaurus the heck out the word gratitude; I could drive over to your house and bow down at each of your feet (well actually, that would just be weird); none of it would accurately convey the love I feel for those of you who have invited me into your worlds, and trusted me to capture your magic moments. Looking over this year in photos and zeroing in on my favorite moments of yours makes me feel all heart fluttery and bursting with love. Love for you, my clients, my people, YOU made 2012 an incredible year, filled to the brim with unicorns and rainbows. And though it feels inadequate just typing it, please feel the hugs, see the tears of appreciation, and know that I say it with as much love as I have in my heart: THANK YOU!

thank you, thank you

thank you thank you for our food

for homes and rest and all things good

for the wind and the leaves and the sun up above

but most of all for those we LOVE

thank you thank you

This is a blessing the children at Franny's preschool say before eating their snack each day. I love it, especially the hand gestures that indicate wind, and love (tiny hands over heart, I swear my breath catches every time I witness it).

Along with heaps and heaps of appreciation, I'm sending you wishes for a day filled with love, warm homes, full tummies, and cute kids reciting what they're thankful for (Franny's is whipped cream).

Love, Posy

not perfect, just perfectly YOU

I am totally down with thoughtfully outfitting the family, conjuring up dreamy locations, planning, primping, and prepping, as long as everyone is on board with all of that flying out the window when we add kids and Mother Nature to the mix. Children stick out their tongues. Busy parents forget to pack diapers. Potty accidents happen. Newly walking babies refuse to sit down. Sibling kisses lead to wrestling matches. Vintage dresses rip. Controlled chaos is the name of this game, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I mean, how boring would these photos be if everyone was just sitting and smiling at the camera, right?

What I mean is this: Do not be fooled by what appears “composed and collected”; remember the saying “there is more than meets the eye” exists with reason. Go ahead and plan your photo session, pick your style, give it thought, but please let go of your expectations for perfection. Real life is all about MacGyver-ing a diaper, re-fashioning ripped dresses, rolling with grumpy moods, looking beyond bumps and bruises, avoiding looming wasp nests (yup, that happened!), and children running wild and free. It’s the daily grind of being a parent. And I hope you can see in these photos, the great beauty in the mistakes and mishaps. Because when the sun sets at the end of the day, it's all about making memories.

the gray gang announce: now we are six!

There are six Grays in these photos.

Tiffany, Shanon, Memphis, Odessa, and Raleigh are thrilled to be adding another location to their family map! And I could not be more honored to be spreading the big news right here on my blog. I have loved watching this family grow in the almost-five years I've known them, and I am so excited to witness and document more of their change.

We hit The Island this weekend for the Gray's annual fall photo session - there are many more gorgeous images to come- Tiffany thought up this cute idea for announcing their pregnancy, and well, how could I not get down with this?! So dear loved ones of this gorgeous gang, in case the photos and words have not already made it abundantly clear, here's the official announcement: come March there's gonna be a new Gray in town!

Ruby Jane

Oh Ruby Jane, I looked into those big eyes the first time I met you, when you were just three months old, and I saw a special spark. You are indeed a little firecracker; a girl who runs fast, a girl who replies "NO WAY!" when asked to comply, a girl with those qualities that challenge your parents, but will work in your favor as a grown woman: independence, strong will, and conviction. I am lucky to know you, Ruby, and I adore that you make me chase you throughout our entire sessions. For it makes the end prize all that much sweeter. Sure I let you wear my sunglasses and play with my toy camera, you may even think you had me beat, but oh no, my dear, your parents and I, we got what we wanted out of you that day at the park: authentic images capturing your incredible spirit. So thank you, sweet Ruby. And Danny and Emily, thank you for inviting me into your world once again. I cannot wait to see what Baby Boy has in store for us when he arrives! xo, PQ

Waiting for Julian

I blogged a couple of weeks ago with one photo from this session because I just couldn't not share it. And because, well, I fell head over heals for sweet Eliana. It must have been something about the combination of her bouncy blonde curls, big blue eyes, pink cheeks and a full personality to match. All that and the burst of sunshine on that day really pulled me out of my funk. We had SO much fun! Eliana dialed up some music for us on the family computer, in that awesomely independent way an almost 3-year-old takes charge; she showed off her purple penguin pajamas but quickly changed into her bright green tutu; she bounced on the bed; she gave Mama many zerberts. She is said to be the Queen of the Zerbert. Do you call it a zerbert? Maybe raspberry? We call it a pruiser at our house, because that's what my husband's grandfather called it. Are there other names for it? Oh but how I digress... We compared belly buttons; gave kisses to baby brother Julian and told him we were anxious to meet him; we dug for worms; took a neighborhood walk; and played hide and seek in the forest that is Pier Park. And in two weeks I get to go back and hang with this super awesome family again. I get to photo some tiny baby fingers and toes, sibling love, and the transformation from three to four. Someone commented on my Facebook page this week that I have the best job in the world, and really, I can't argue with that. I am so lucky. Thank you, Sara, Greg, Ellie and soon Julian, for welcoming me in and allowing me to capture these moments for you. See you soon!
xo

I found my unicorns

As I suspected, my funk didn't stick around long. The sun shined for a few hours Saturday morning, I met the most ridiculously adorable curly haired tutu'd girl, and her sweet family, and I got to capture this moment. Just look at that sweetness and try not to smile, I dare ya.

I'll be back with plenty more goodness soon.
