shoshana and her colorful crew

Shoshana is a mama, attorney, photographer, and all around goddess, living in New York City, who just happened to find herself and her cast of characters, ahem, I mean family, in Portland last summer; And even better, they asked me to capture their magic while they were here. I know, I am just beyond lucky. ANYWAY, because I'll be seeing two-thirds of these peeps at Field Trip later this week (whoop! whoop! happy dance), it feels like the perfect time to share this session.

Here's a session from summer that I never did blog. Seeing as how it has a bit of a driving theme, and I'm getting ready to teach my second round of Driving Your Business for The Define School, well it seemed like a good a time as any to share this fun session.

Now please do me a favor and indulge me by letting me talk about teaching just for a moment (or don't, go ahead and click away, I'll try not to get my feelings hurt). When I signed on to teach this class, I really had no idea what I was getting into. I knew I had some things to say, maybe a few gems to contribute to fellow family photographers, but I didn't really give a lot of thought to whether or not I would enjoy the process. But OH did I enjoy it! And not just the writing of the class - though that was a fun challenge to embark on (side note: when I started writing I thought surely I wouldn't be able to fill more than a few pages with my "method." But when I finished, I had typed up something like 30 pages. I guess we know I've never been short on words, but I was pretty damn surprised and a little proud of myself!). Ahem, digression is something else I'm quite good at... What I really loved about teaching the class for Define was the community of photographers who I got to engage with on a weekly basis. I loved sending out the lessons and getting responses; working through questions, tackling specific problems, and sharing thoughts and ideas as a group. And I LOVED reading the student's assignments as they came back - seeing how they took my words/ideas/process and applied it to their own work. It was incredibly rewarding and I loved every minute of it. The online group forum created by Define allows everyone to interact, hash out ideas and problems together, and be "in class" in a way I hadn't experienced before. I really felt like I got to know a lot of the people in my class over the four weeks we were "together" and I feel like I grew from it as much as [I hope] they did.

But sheesh, enough of me talking about ME. Here's a few quotes from my students, just so you know I wasn't the only one who enjoyed my class. Ha!

This class has pushed me to create a very clear vision of the direction I want my business to go in as well as how to handle my clients so that we can all get the most out of our time together. It has given me the steps I need to take to create a better flow for my business and my approach with clients. I loved the personable way in which you presented information. It made it fun and easy to process but also got me thinking. You didn't just hand out answers but provided tools and opportunities to help us find what works best for ourselves and our business. You're a peach. - Lauren L.

I am so happy that I chose to take Posy Quarterman's class at DEFINE! Being knee deep in a full time photography career, her class was EXACTLY what I needed to help me get on track, stay focused and get organized. What I loved most about it was that week to week the tasks were doable not overwhelming and her warm and supportive nature was just what I needed to reassure myself and stay on task. I have used her tricks and tips since her class and have never been more successful! I highly recommend this class for anyone who is trying to start a photography business, already testing the waters, or even if you are already there and just need someone to show you how THEY handle the business side of things. With truly helpful tried and true suggestions to help you streamline your business, this is the class for you if you are aiming for the stars! – Audrey B.

Honestly, the preparation that you’ve presented (and the actual doing it, of course) has been a life changer. I would say this class has been huge for me; It’s opened my eyes and has seriously helped me feel more confident and prepared. In turn, I'm much more able to be ME and fully present with my clients from the moment I arrive. THAT was AMAZING. - Amy P.

For me this class was hugely informative; I feel like as I continue to shoot and work towards my own honed style I have the tools needed to run and manage my business successfully. - Toni E.

Classes begin January 5th and registration for those classes opens Monday, December 15th! Apparently January is the quickest block to sell out at Define, so mark your calendars. And here's one more incentive: investing in a January class during  December registration will reduce your tax liability for 2014. I'm all about that. Wahoo! I hope to "see" you in my class in January!

Oh man do Kelly and Adrien have their hands full with Quinlyn and Reese, but luckily it is in the most fun (and adorable) way. These girls are as full of as much energy as one would expect from nearly-three-year-olds, doubled up in twin form, and with an extra shot of spirit. Their personalities are as unique from each other as their method of eating ice cream was (see below). Ha! I loved these girls and had so much fun photographing this sweet family in their home, and strolling through their neighborhood, on a beautiful summer day.Posy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.com Posy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comPosy Quarterman Photography, www.photoposy.comxo, PQ

our summer on film, part two

Finally taking a moment to blog the rest of the film I shot this summer. None of it is perfect, in fact I would change at least one thing about just about every one of these frames, and yet if I can quiet the perfectionist control freak in myself a little, I actually like that quality about film. The combination of the challenge for myself to be better and more controlled with my shooting, and the part where it is just a bit out of my control.  I don't even know if those ramblings make sense. Let's move on... While I don't love this collection quite as much as I loved the first film I scans I got back from summer, what I love is how much it encapsulates how we spent our summer. While we did travel and adventure a fair amount (as seen in the other photos), we spent much of our summer at the pool, where Franny went from pulling herself out of the water during her first lesson, face covered in snot, insisting she just couldn't do it, to her mastering the art of swimming and floating; it was one hell of an encouraging time for her.

The rest of our summer was spent doing just what I think one should spend their summer doing: backyard birthday parties, lemonade and "root ber flot" stands, more quick overnight beach trips with friends than we've ever crammed into a summer, a visit to a graveyard, two run-ins with big bubble dudes, lots and lots of friend time, and one really giant spider.

a leisurely summer evening at home

I have been dreaming about capturing sweet Yvie since the day I met her at the Farmer's Market three summers ago, when she was just a wee babe. I knew her parents, Travis and Nicole, through the neighborhood (and their fabulous watering hole Leisure Public House), and I'm certain I dropped some pretty big loud hints about wanting to photo them. But as with many good things, they take some patience, and so you'll understand how delighted I was when I heard from Nicole over the summer, that they were ready to book their family session. We met up at their home shortly after Miss Yvie celebrated her third birthday, on a perfectly gorgeous summer evening; we read stories, played with their kitten, Dolly, romped around their lovely yard, drank fancy cocktails (bonus to having bar-owners as clients!), picked flowers, played with Dolly some more, Yvie and I became besties (she is a serious little love bug), and we all just soaked up the end of summer. I could not have dreamed up a better session if I had tried. archer's farm

I've heard a thing or two about this Don Kruger fellow, but according to soon-to-be-big-brother Archer, this is his farmland out on Sauvie Island, and well, I'm inclined to believe the kid. Just look at the way he owns it! Seriously though, these folks... Just look at how Andy looks at Alexis, or how Alexis laughs at Andy, or Archer and Alexis's matching silly expressions. They. Just. Slay. Me.

I have no doubt the next little member of their family will have loads of personality, and I can hardly wait until early winter when I get to meet him and capture their family as four. Eep!

the carlsons of cannon beach

Sometimes a family in Denver buys a house in Cannon Beach and decides they want to hire a photographer to capture their beachy summer selves. And sometimes they get on Pinterest and search "Cannon Beach family photos" and come across MY photos. And sometimes they tell their cousin in Portland that they're going to work with me and the cousin exclaims "EVERYONE in Portland wants to work with Posy!" And sometimes they tell me that in the kitchen of their gorgeous beach house, and I blush and gush and internally freak out (what if I don't live up to this ridiculous rumor!). And sometimes the sun shines brighter than it has EVER shined at Cannon Beach and we make the most of it and have a silly good time and capture a little gem or two here and there, because just look at this family and this beach, that's a combination that would be really hard to screw up. And I am SO grateful I didn't! Phew. mother & daughter session in maryland

I met up with Cara and Catherine on the gorgeous and peaceful grounds of the school little C attends and big C works for. Just look at this school's little corner of the world and tell me it doesn't make you want to move your family to Maryland?! Ours was the last of my East Coast travel sessions, and was just what I needed after four whirlwind days in New York. There really isn't much I can say about this beautiful and loving little duo that the photos don't say for me; so without further adieu... julie and her berkeley boys

I've known Julie most of our lives, but hadn't seen her since she moved to the Bay Area after college. I was thrilled when she asked me to spend a day in Berkeley documenting her and her boys. Sadly her husband came down with a stomach bug that morning and missed the session, which I guess is the downside to tightly scheduled travel sessions. I have to admit I was the teensiest bit nervous about shooting teenage boys; thankfully they were mostly game, as game as teenagers are going to be for getting followed around by their mom's old friend and her camera. Ha! They were actually completely polite to me, hilarious with each other, and perfectly loving with their mama. central park in june

Ali and Gray met in NYC when Ali was in med school there. Fast forward seven years and now they live in Portland, with three kids and a cat. We get together once a year to capture the craziness that is three small children under one roof, and I always laugh as hard as I work at their sessions. This year when Ali heard I was offering sessions in New York, she decided to book flights for ALL FIVE OF THEM just so she and Gray could be captured in the city where they fell in love. How crazy cool is that?! I was beyond flattered when she told me. And we had just as much fun in Central Park as we have had in previous years around Portland. PS- did you spy the squirrel?

summer in the city

My feelings for New York are complicated; I was born-but-not-entirely-raised there; I spent all of my childhood summers in New York, but I consider myself an Oregonian; My father has lived and breathed NYC for all of his 60-something years; New York is in my blood, but I don't often feel like I belong there. This family, however, they are NEW YORKERS. Living in Tribeca just blocks from Battery Park City, where we captured these images that make me smile more every time I look at them. Thanks to the magical internet, by way of Instagram, Susan found me when I announced travel sessions earlier this year. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with her and her incredibly spirited family on one perfectly New York summer evening. Enjoy! Nina, George, and Mindi are no exception, I kind of didn't want to leave when Burko was showing all signs of I'm tired, this is over, Lady.

We spent a "typical Sunday" together, reading stories and wrestling around in their apartment, a walk to their favorite neighborhood  park (and happened upon a block party which meant the street was closed which meant we got to take photos in the middle of an otherwise busy neighborhood street - whoop whoop!), and finished off our day with ice cream. It doesn't really get any better than that. I love you, Barkers! Maybe someday I'll get to see your the West Coast version of your perfect Sunday...

amy grace

If you know Amy Grace you'll understand why I am struggling a bit to write this, and really wishing I could channel her spirit and gift for words (or just have her write this herself!). If you don't know Amy, just stop right now and go take in her words and marvel at her beautiful images, give yourself time to really absorb it all. No really, go ahead, I hope to see you back here in a few hours.

Amy is a force: a force of love and kindness, with a great depth of authenticity. Amy is the real deal.

You know how you follow people online for years, you "know" them through social media, but you've never spent any real life moments with them so you just don't really know them. And then you meet them and they are all the wonderful things you hoped they'd be and then some? That's what meeting Amy was like. She picked me up from the airport with her sweet shaggy-haired boy in the backseat, and I liked her instantly. I had already liked her, actually, but now I knew I'd been right all along. By the end of the afternoon we spent together, picking her bright-as-sunshine daughter up from summer camp, eating yummy bowls of spicy Korean beef together, driving around the sloping hills of the Marin Headlands, and romping around a fancy hotel room in San Francisco - telling stories, sharing secrets, getting to know each other, and laughing A LOT - I loved her, and her two children who are somehow completely their own people while also being perfect clones of their mama. Three pieces of one heart, these three. I am better with loves on my team of real world friends.

seattle grays

As far as I'm concerned summer begins on the first day of June and doesn't end until I've packed up the sandals, which hopefully is some point in mid-October (have I mentioned I love summer?!). Professionally, this summer has been made up largely, or more accurately, in part, with travel sessions, and these kicked off on June 1st in Seattle with the amazing Gray family (who also happen to be photographers, which is like extra sweet icing on top of the cake, or something better that doesn't give you a toothache). Melissa and I put our heads together about what would most authentically represent a day-in-the-Gray-life and came up with so many fun ideas we decided to do our best to check as many off the list as we could. And we did. PJs, eggs benedict, stories, snuggles, gardening, park/lake/ducks, a romp through the forrest behind their home, and a picnic tossed in there for good measure. And it was all things wonderful and beautiful and worthy of the this-is-why-I-do-this feelings. And this, my friends, was just the first day of summer. I have SO much more to share with you (I'm pretty sure I still have some spring to blog, but let's just pretend I didn't say that...). It has been one helluva summer and it isn't even close to being over yet (shush!). I'll be back soon with more. And a big announcement. Wahoo! xo, PQ

liz, emme, & edward

The evening before this session Liz and Emme attended a memorial service for Liz's best friend, Emme's "uncle" Edward, who had passed away suddenly and far too young. Edward loved plaid, especially Burberry, and he was never without a hat on his head (usually of the fedora style). I didn't know Edward, but these are the things I gleaned about him during my time with Liz and Emme on this evening. That, and that he was very much loved. The plaid buttons Liz and Emme wore for our session were made by one of Edward's friends in tribute to him, and distributed at his service. I wasn't sure if Liz would be comfortable with our session falling the day after Edward's memorial, but she felt good about moving forward and I'm so glad she did; I was concerned there would be too much sadness at our session to capture the joy and playfulness between this mother-daughter team. As it turned out the night prior had been one of celebrating a wonderful man, and these two carried that into our session, and in part brought Edward with them. It was beautiful to witness and I feel so lucky to have been able to capture these memories and this time for them.

Oh and we went for gelato afterwards, so yeah, this was I'd call a stellar sesh start to finish.
