miette inside

Tomorrow morning I get to meet and photograph the newest member of this family, Miette, who was born just a few weeks ago. I figured I ought to share her first photo session - the one in which she was still in her mama's belly - first. I cannot wait to see Julien and Annouk in big brother/sister mode, and, of course, to get some brand new baby snuggle time in. edward & annabelle

I'm always prepared to really have to work when I photograph a newborn with an older sibling. There are so many dynamics at play and changes afoot that even the most well-planned photo session can get derailed. And it's no wonder, it's a lot to expect of a little person whose world has just been flipped upside and inside out. So I went into this session expecting to have to charm, coerce, and even beg if I had to. I had a pocket full of Smarties that I was ready to disburse as frequently as needed. But nope, none of it was required with Miss Annabelle. She might just be the most proud and loving big sister I have ever encountered. She spent nearly our entire session whispering to Edward: Ooooo, it's okay, Eddie. I love you, Eddie. You are such a good baby, Eddie. I love you, Baby. Don't cry, Baby. And on, and on, and on with the sweetness, while I just hung back and snapped on. I love a good challenge, but I won't lie, it's nice when the kiddos take it easy on me from time to time. the carlsons of cannon beach

Sometimes a family in Denver buys a house in Cannon Beach and decides they want to hire a photographer to capture their beachy summer selves. And sometimes they get on Pinterest and search "Cannon Beach family photos" and come across MY photos. And sometimes they tell their cousin in Portland that they're going to work with me and the cousin exclaims "EVERYONE in Portland wants to work with Posy!" And sometimes they tell me that in the kitchen of their gorgeous beach house, and I blush and gush and internally freak out (what if I don't live up to this ridiculous rumor!). And sometimes the sun shines brighter than it has EVER shined at Cannon Beach and we make the most of it and have a silly good time and capture a little gem or two here and there, because just look at this family and this beach, that's a combination that would be really hard to screw up. And I am SO grateful I didn't! Phew. julie and her berkeley boys

I've known Julie most of our lives, but hadn't seen her since she moved to the Bay Area after college. I was thrilled when she asked me to spend a day in Berkeley documenting her and her boys. Sadly her husband came down with a stomach bug that morning and missed the session, which I guess is the downside to tightly scheduled travel sessions. I have to admit I was the teensiest bit nervous about shooting teenage boys; thankfully they were mostly game, as game as teenagers are going to be for getting followed around by their mom's old friend and her camera. Ha! They were actually completely polite to me, hilarious with each other, and perfectly loving with their mama. central park in june

Ali and Gray met in NYC when Ali was in med school there. Fast forward seven years and now they live in Portland, with three kids and a cat. We get together once a year to capture the craziness that is three small children under one roof, and I always laugh as hard as I work at their sessions. This year when Ali heard I was offering sessions in New York, she decided to book flights for ALL FIVE OF THEM just so she and Gray could be captured in the city where they fell in love. How crazy cool is that?! I was beyond flattered when she told me. And we had just as much fun in Central Park as we have had in previous years around Portland. PS- did you spy the squirrel?

summer in the city

My feelings for New York are complicated; I was born-but-not-entirely-raised there; I spent all of my childhood summers in New York, but I consider myself an Oregonian; My father has lived and breathed NYC for all of his 60-something years; New York is in my blood, but I don't often feel like I belong there. This family, however, they are NEW YORKERS. Living in Tribeca just blocks from Battery Park City, where we captured these images that make me smile more every time I look at them. Thanks to the magical internet, by way of Instagram, Susan found me when I announced travel sessions earlier this year. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with her and her incredibly spirited family on one perfectly New York summer evening. Enjoy! We spent a "typical Sunday" together, reading stories and wrestling around in their apartment, a walk to their favorite neighborhood  park (and happened upon a block party which meant the street was closed which meant we got to take photos in the middle of an otherwise busy neighborhood street - whoop whoop!), and finished off our day with ice cream. It doesn't really get any better than that. I love you, Barkers! Maybe someday I'll get to see your the West Coast version of your perfect Sunday...

amy grace

If you know Amy Grace you'll understand why I am struggling a bit to write this, and really wishing I could channel her spirit and gift for words (or just have her write this herself!). If you don't know Amy, just stop right now and go take in her words and marvel at her beautiful images, give yourself time to really absorb it all. No really, go ahead, I hope to see you back here in a few hours.

Amy is a force: a force of love and kindness, with a great depth of authenticity. Amy is the real deal.

You know how you follow people online for years, you "know" them through social media, but you've never spent any real life moments with them so you just don't really know them. And then you meet them and they are all the wonderful things you hoped they'd be and then some? That's what meeting Amy was like. She picked me up from the airport with her sweet shaggy-haired boy in the backseat, and I liked her instantly. I had already liked her, actually, but now I knew I'd been right all along. By the end of the afternoon we spent together, picking her bright-as-sunshine daughter up from summer camp, eating yummy bowls of spicy Korean beef together, driving around the sloping hills of the Marin Headlands, and romping around a fancy hotel room in San Francisco - telling stories, sharing secrets, getting to know each other, and laughing A LOT - I loved her, and her two children who are somehow completely their own people while also being perfect clones of their mama. Three pieces of one heart, these three. I am better with loves on my team of real world friends.

seattle grays

As far as I'm concerned summer begins on the first day of June and doesn't end until I've packed up the sandals, which hopefully is some point in mid-October (have I mentioned I love summer?!). Professionally, this summer has been made up largely, or more accurately, in part, with travel sessions, and these kicked off on June 1st in Seattle with the amazing Gray family (who also happen to be photographers, which is like extra sweet icing on top of the cake, or something better that doesn't give you a toothache). Melissa and I put our heads together about what would most authentically represent a day-in-the-Gray-life and came up with so many fun ideas we decided to do our best to check as many off the list as we could. And we did. PJs, eggs benedict, stories, snuggles, gardening, park/lake/ducks, a romp through the forrest behind their home, and a picnic tossed in there for good measure. And it was all things wonderful and beautiful and worthy of the this-is-why-I-do-this feelings. And this, my friends, was just the first day of summer. I have SO much more to share with you (I'm pretty sure I still have some spring to blog, but let's just pretend I didn't say that...). It has been one helluva summer and it isn't even close to being over yet (shush!). I'll be back soon with more. And a big announcement. Wahoo! xo, PQ

our thirteen together

If you've read this blog for more than five minutes you know I am plentiful in favorites; I used to think it was impossible to pick a favorite, until I realized that favorites aren't exclusive. I don't have a favorite food, song, movie, pair of boots... you get the idea. So when I sit down to write a blog post I start nearly every one calling the family in the photos "my favorite" and then scratching it because YOU ARE ALL MY FAVORITE. And trying to narrow down a  year that was cram-packed with awesomeness, into a select handful of favorite images, well as far as I'm concerned, it just can't be done; keeping this one under 200 was almost more than I could handle. In the end, I'm sharing one hundred and seventy-something favorite images from 2013, yours and mine, ours together.

To my dear clients, friends, and blog readers,

Oh and we went for gelato afterwards, so yeah, this was I'd call a stellar sesh start to finish.

what a summer evening at home looks like.

I love this session for it's casual authentic beautiful real everyday lifeness (spell check says that isn't a word but I'm going with it). This is how Sukey and Cork, and their silly cute kids, Jack and Addie, keep themselves busy on those lovely long summer evenings, and I love that this is what they wanted captured and recorded: pictures of their summer memories.

I love photographing people in the comfort of their own homes, but I'm always down for a adventure that has me shooting in a less traditional setting. This being the session of the family behind the force that is Supportland (Katrina, Michael, Daphne and Zucca) it seemed only appropriate the we do something totally Portland (hello Portland Flea I'm talking to you). And after pining over the School House Electric catalog it occurred to me that the place has gorgeous light, every inch of it is photo-worthy, and they're on the Supportland network, so it just seemed like the perfect home-away-from-home for these folks. We had a stupid amount of fun on this day and I am beyond thrilled with the results.

In other news, you guys, it's November. We have officially arrived at the season of needing an indoor location for photos. When home isn't an option I am always willing to think outside the box with you; I love the creative challenge of coming up with a location that suits your family and works for photos. And even though we are nearing the end of Christmas Card Crazytown scheduling, I have had a handful of people need to reschedule their sessions this month to later in the year and have a couple spots left that will guarantee a mid-December turnaround. So if you thought you were too late for fall family photos, or maybe you were just waiting for the rain to set in for a very Northwesty photo session (ha!), we are officially here. Oh and while we're talking scheduling, I only have a couple December sessions available but would love love love to do a tree cutting/decorating/celebrating-winter session with a few of you.

Oh hey I just looked out the window and I see blue sky, fluffy clouds, and the sun, on November 2nd, what the whaaaat?!

The first time I met Melissa was four or five years ago at New Seasons; her blog was one of the first I had ever followed, and I recognized the boys in her shopping cart. I fumbled over my words and completely embarrassed myself, saying something along the lines of It's so weird how I feel like I know your family but you have no idea who I am. Not creepy at all.

Cut to this summer when I finally got her rad not-so-little family in front of my camera (something I'll admit I had wanted for a long time). Her kids have an incredible dress-up box and love to perform, they spend a lot of time at home and around the neighborhood, so it seemed obvious that we would incorporate those elements of  their everyday into our session. I'd say it worked out...

I could write many paragraphs about how much I adore this family. Jacob and Franny went to preschool together last year, and are thick as thieves; sometimes they're going to get married, sometimes they're brother and sister, always their love for each other is fierce.

This wasn't a Halloween-inspired photo session. Jacob isn't even dressing up as Spiderman for Halloween (he's a clown, as is his dad, Ruby is a lion, Susan is the ring master. Seriously, this family is rad.) Spiderman came to the photo session because Jake is almost always at work, and on this day, he was working as a super hero. The first time I picked him up from school for an after school play date, he told me in a completely matter-of-fact fashion that he was employed by the Coast Guard as a deep sea diver, it was hard work but he got to be in the water all day so it was alright; he used to be a fire fighter but he was fired after he was found eating mac-n-cheese when he was supposed to be suiting up for a fire. He had really let his coworkers down. Oh man, get this kid going on his coworkers and you'll be entertained for hours. When he's working as a super hero he has a coworker named Medical Pants. She wears no pants, but you can't tell when she's flying. Seriously, you can't make this stuff up. But Jacob can. And boy do we love him for it.

And Ruby. Oh Ruby. The first time I saw her face, and those eyes, I knew I was going to have to get her in front of my camera. She's as feisty as her brother is imaginative, with just the right amount sass to go along with that darling face. She's rarely seen without at least one baby in her arms ('not sure how we ended up without any at the photo session) and she doesn't tolerate any guff from the big kids. She's one of those kids you just want to scoop up eat when you see her, but you learn quickly that she's much tougher than those sweet curls imply. You've got to work a little to earn Ruby's trust, and that's just as it should be.

I'll spare you the additional paragraphs about the parents, because I think you can tell by these images, and just how incredible their kids are, that they're doing this parenting thing just right. I feel pretty dang lucky to have them not just as clients but as friends too.
