edward & annabelle

I'm always prepared to really have to work when I photograph a newborn with an older sibling. There are so many dynamics at play and changes afoot that even the most well-planned photo session can get derailed. And it's no wonder, it's a lot to expect of a little person whose world has just been flipped upside and inside out. So I went into this session expecting to have to charm, coerce, and even beg if I had to. I had a pocket full of Smarties that I was ready to disburse as frequently as needed. But nope, none of it was required with Miss Annabelle. She might just be the most proud and loving big sister I have ever encountered. She spent nearly our entire session whispering to Edward: Ooooo, it's okay, Eddie. I love you, Eddie. You are such a good baby, Eddie. I love you, Baby. Don't cry, Baby. And on, and on, and on with the sweetness, while I just hung back and snapped on. I love a good challenge, but I won't lie, it's nice when the kiddos take it easy on me from time to time. a leisurely summer evening at home

I have been dreaming about capturing sweet Yvie since the day I met her at the Farmer's Market three summers ago, when she was just a wee babe. I knew her parents, Travis and Nicole, through the neighborhood (and their fabulous watering hole Leisure Public House), and I'm certain I dropped some pretty big loud hints about wanting to photo them. But as with many good things, they take some patience, and so you'll understand how delighted I was when I heard from Nicole over the summer, that they were ready to book their family session. We met up at their home shortly after Miss Yvie celebrated her third birthday, on a perfectly gorgeous summer evening; we read stories, played with their kitten, Dolly, romped around their lovely yard, drank fancy cocktails (bonus to having bar-owners as clients!), picked flowers, played with Dolly some more, Yvie and I became besties (she is a serious little love bug), and we all just soaked up the end of summer. I could not have dreamed up a better session if I had tried. archer's farm

I've heard a thing or two about this Don Kruger fellow, but according to soon-to-be-big-brother Archer, this is his farmland out on Sauvie Island, and well, I'm inclined to believe the kid. Just look at the way he owns it! Seriously though, these folks... Just look at how Andy looks at Alexis, or how Alexis laughs at Andy, or Archer and Alexis's matching silly expressions. They. Just. Slay. Me.

I have no doubt the next little member of their family will have loads of personality, and I can hardly wait until early winter when I get to meet him and capture their family as four. Eep!

the carlsons of cannon beach

Sometimes a family in Denver buys a house in Cannon Beach and decides they want to hire a photographer to capture their beachy summer selves. And sometimes they get on Pinterest and search "Cannon Beach family photos" and come across MY photos. And sometimes they tell their cousin in Portland that they're going to work with me and the cousin exclaims "EVERYONE in Portland wants to work with Posy!" And sometimes they tell me that in the kitchen of their gorgeous beach house, and I blush and gush and internally freak out (what if I don't live up to this ridiculous rumor!). And sometimes the sun shines brighter than it has EVER shined at Cannon Beach and we make the most of it and have a silly good time and capture a little gem or two here and there, because just look at this family and this beach, that's a combination that would be really hard to screw up. And I am SO grateful I didn't! Phew. mother & daughter session in maryland

I met up with Cara and Catherine on the gorgeous and peaceful grounds of the school little C attends and big C works for. Just look at this school's little corner of the world and tell me it doesn't make you want to move your family to Maryland?! Ours was the last of my East Coast travel sessions, and was just what I needed after four whirlwind days in New York. There really isn't much I can say about this beautiful and loving little duo that the photos don't say for me; so without further adieu... summer in the city

My feelings for New York are complicated; I was born-but-not-entirely-raised there; I spent all of my childhood summers in New York, but I consider myself an Oregonian; My father has lived and breathed NYC for all of his 60-something years; New York is in my blood, but I don't often feel like I belong there. This family, however, they are NEW YORKERS. Living in Tribeca just blocks from Battery Park City, where we captured these images that make me smile more every time I look at them. Thanks to the magical internet, by way of Instagram, Susan found me when I announced travel sessions earlier this year. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with her and her incredibly spirited family on one perfectly New York summer evening. Enjoy! This here being one of my favorite families and sessions of summer, in my all time favorite city: Portland.

I'm not sure I'll ever get all the sessions I want to up on this blog, but I am trying my best because it has been one helluva year and sharing my sessions with you, whoever YOU are, is one of my favoritey favorite things about doing this whole fabulous thing I get to do.

What I'm saying is it may be fall, but you're going to see a whole lot more summer on here before you see any yellow leaves. {winky face}

amy grace

If you know Amy Grace you'll understand why I am struggling a bit to write this, and really wishing I could channel her spirit and gift for words (or just have her write this herself!). If you don't know Amy, just stop right now and go take in her words and marvel at her beautiful images, give yourself time to really absorb it all. No really, go ahead, I hope to see you back here in a few hours.

Amy is a force: a force of love and kindness, with a great depth of authenticity. Amy is the real deal.

You know how you follow people online for years, you "know" them through social media, but you've never spent any real life moments with them so you just don't really know them. And then you meet them and they are all the wonderful things you hoped they'd be and then some? That's what meeting Amy was like. She picked me up from the airport with her sweet shaggy-haired boy in the backseat, and I liked her instantly. I had already liked her, actually, but now I knew I'd been right all along. By the end of the afternoon we spent together, picking her bright-as-sunshine daughter up from summer camp, eating yummy bowls of spicy Korean beef together, driving around the sloping hills of the Marin Headlands, and romping around a fancy hotel room in San Francisco - telling stories, sharing secrets, getting to know each other, and laughing A LOT - I loved her, and her two children who are somehow completely their own people while also being perfect clones of their mama. Three pieces of one heart, these three. I am better with loves on my team of real world friends.

seattle grays

As far as I'm concerned summer begins on the first day of June and doesn't end until I've packed up the sandals, which hopefully is some point in mid-October (have I mentioned I love summer?!). Professionally, this summer has been made up largely, or more accurately, in part, with travel sessions, and these kicked off on June 1st in Seattle with the amazing Gray family (who also happen to be photographers, which is like extra sweet icing on top of the cake, or something better that doesn't give you a toothache). Melissa and I put our heads together about what would most authentically represent a day-in-the-Gray-life and came up with so many fun ideas we decided to do our best to check as many off the list as we could. And we did. PJs, eggs benedict, stories, snuggles, gardening, park/lake/ducks, a romp through the forrest behind their home, and a picnic tossed in there for good measure. And it was all things wonderful and beautiful and worthy of the this-is-why-I-do-this feelings. And this, my friends, was just the first day of summer. I have SO much more to share with you (I'm pretty sure I still have some spring to blog, but let's just pretend I didn't say that...). It has been one helluva summer and it isn't even close to being over yet (shush!). I'll be back soon with more. And a big announcement. Wahoo! xo, PQ

mother's day with the dimoffs, year 2

Maybe you'll remember that Kati and I spent last Mother's Day together, driving for seven hours to shoot film of each other's families in gorgeous (and slightly splintery) hills in Washington? It was fun and beautiful and entirely exhausting, but in the best way. This year... well we just didn't have it in us. We concocted some plans that may or may not play out next year, but Mother's Day 2014 found us at Portland Nursery, where we bought a wagon's worth of lovely succulents, luscious ferns, a few smelly herbs, and some fancy flowers. We casually snapped a few photos, took the kids out for ice cream, and then ditched them with the dads and went to a movie. It was really a wonderful low-key day.

Thanks to Kati for these last two images (and all the other super lovely shots you captured)! So excited to have some updated profile page photos!

our thirteen together

If you've read this blog for more than five minutes you know I am plentiful in favorites; I used to think it was impossible to pick a favorite, until I realized that favorites aren't exclusive. I don't have a favorite food, song, movie, pair of boots... you get the idea. So when I sit down to write a blog post I start nearly every one calling the family in the photos "my favorite" and then scratching it because YOU ARE ALL MY FAVORITE. And trying to narrow down a  year that was cram-packed with awesomeness, into a select handful of favorite images, well as far as I'm concerned, it just can't be done; keeping this one under 200 was almost more than I could handle. In the end, I'm sharing one hundred and seventy-something favorite images from 2013, yours and mine, ours together.

To my dear clients, friends, and blog readers,

May 2014 bring you as much laughter, joy, thoughtfulness, and love, as you all shined on me in 2013. As a thank you, and a fun way to kick off the first quarter of the year, I'm offering a $50 discount on all sessions booked in the next 14 days, to take place by 3/31/2014 (session must be booked and deposit paid by 1/14/2014).

Happy new year!

chloe, the girl who stole a little piece of my heart.

On a perfectly autumnal day in October I met Chloe and her family at their home and we made some pretty pictures of their loving family and super sweet life together. Chloe's mama, Erin, said she wanted photos while Chloe still had a mouth full of baby teeth, and well, I'd say we got them (just look at all those baby-toothy smiles!).  But get this, the very next day when Erin picked her up from school, Chloe had lost her first tooth! Talk about perfect timing...

I could stop this post right there and have you thinking Chloe is just like every other cheerful five-year-old, because in many ways she is. She loves to sing and dance, do puzzles with her dad, and play with her sweet dog, Clarke. She especially loves all things Star Wars (she was Darth Maul for Halloween!), she has an incredibly infectious laugh, and her freckles go all the way up to her forehead! But what makes Chloe's joyous spirit remarkable is that she battles cystic fibrosis (a deadly genetic disease) every day of her life; in order to just breathe she takes dozens of pills and does hours of breathing treatments every single day.

Her parents would want you to know that she is so much more than her disease, so I hope I've made that obvious here.  I walked away a bit surprised that she was so exuberant; I guess without realizing it I was expecting Chloe to seem sick, and what makes her so incredible is that despite her illness and treatments that consume hours of each day, she is an absolute delight. The ugliness of her disease is what makes that sparkle in her eye that much brighter to her parents, and I imagine anyone who comes in contact with her. I've said that Chloe stole a little piece or my heart that day, but maybe what I should say is she and her amazing family made it grow a bit bigger. Maybe that sounds cheesy, but it is honestly how I feel, like there's a little chamber in my heart now just for her.

Another glimpse into the reality of Chloe's world, as well as her family's ongoing fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation can be found here. I encourage you watch the video and give what you can. Soliciting donations is not part of my norm, but well, how can I not in this case? I'll be asking again next spring when they do their walk as well, because this cystic fibrosis business needs its a** kicked, for my pal Chloe, and all the other people battling this ugly disease every day.

Much love, PQ

liz, emme, & edward

The evening before this session Liz and Emme attended a memorial service for Liz's best friend, Emme's "uncle" Edward, who had passed away suddenly and far too young. Edward loved plaid, especially Burberry, and he was never without a hat on his head (usually of the fedora style). I didn't know Edward, but these are the things I gleaned about him during my time with Liz and Emme on this evening. That, and that he was very much loved. The plaid buttons Liz and Emme wore for our session were made by one of Edward's friends in tribute to him, and distributed at his service. I wasn't sure if Liz would be comfortable with our session falling the day after Edward's memorial, but she felt good about moving forward and I'm so glad she did; I was concerned there would be too much sadness at our session to capture the joy and playfulness between this mother-daughter team. As it turned out the night prior had been one of celebrating a wonderful man, and these two carried that into our session, and in part brought Edward with them. It was beautiful to witness and I feel so lucky to have been able to capture these memories and this time for them.

Oh and we went for gelato afterwards, so yeah, this was I'd call a stellar sesh start to finish.

I love this session for it's casual authentic beautiful real everyday lifeness (spell check says that isn't a word but I'm going with it). This is how Sukey and Cork, and their silly cute kids, Jack and Addie, keep themselves busy on those lovely long summer evenings, and I love that this is what they wanted captured and recorded: pictures of their summer memories.
